John is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, and originally trained with a large firm in Birmingham. He was also an audit manager with a predecessor firm of PWC, and was a partner in a local West Midlands practice. He set up Merrick & Co in 1988. He specialises in providing tax and accounting services to owner-managed, middle market companies and charities. He is also the lead partner for each of our clients, overseeing all aspects of the personal service they receive.

Nigel is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. He trained in industry and has extensive experience of management accounting, business planning, systems, budgetary control and forecasting. He regularly advises company boards on business and financial issues and is experienced in providing information to banks such as performance reports, assisting in negotiation of funding arrangements and grant claims. Nigel also provides training on Sage and other accounting packages.

Nick enjoyed a successful career with HMRC in the Midlands spanning some 25 years. He has extensive tax experience covering technical tax advice, enquiry investigations and tax compliance. He also is experienced in preparing and presenting appeals before tax tribunals. He undertakes “health checks” on business records for tax purposes.

Ken has practiced as an accountant for over 45 years, specialising in Corporate Finance with both international accountancy practices and his own practice.

During the completion of many private client corporate disposals, it became clear to Ken that on receipt of large capital sums, clients were often left of their comfort zones and most looked to both investing on the stock market and in commercial property. Little consideration was often given o correct capital structuring the penal risks of 40% Inheritance Tax exposures.

With that in mind, Ken now offers an inheritance tax and investment service, providing properly structured guidance aimed at protecting clients’ capital, forming optimal inheritance and investment structures. These are widely diversified to manage risk, relative to the various markets incorporated. The structure is headed up by a leading Merchant Bank, which provides a UK-wide team of professional, qualified advisors.

A non-practicing Barrister, Simon is a highly experienced in the arean of specialist corporation tax mitigation advice. This includes corporation tax planning solutions, where Simon can advise on a unique array of tax efficient structures that seek to reward and motivate Directors and key stakeholders to help the business be successful.

In addition to other tax saving ideas, Simon can provide guidance and advice on capital allowance tax relief, helping you reclaim the costs incurred from the purchase and/or renovation of a commercial property. He also provides a tax credits research and development service, too, to help innovative businesses grow.

David is a VAT Specialist with many years of experience, both within HMRC and the accountancy profession.

His VAT services are designed to ensure that our clients’ VAT affairs are properly managed with a view to ensuring accuracy or, in the event of error, to providing help and assistance with any resulting HMRC enquiry. In addition to the completion or review of VAT returns or other VAT declarations, David is also able to provide vital VAT health checks, including pre-VAT inspection reviews and can attend VAT inspections to deal with any technical issues and enquiries.

Jules Shaw is AICB and CB Cert qualified with an extensive experience of all elements of accounts preparation for small and medium sized businesses. She is also responsible for providing our VAT return and payroll services.

Matt is a very experienced business turn around consultant. His is able to look at business situations and bring changes to management teams and working practices. His focus is on working with management to help clarify objectives, and analysing complex situations to make them more understandable and actionable. Matt has developed his own Business Toolkit with a strong focus on business performance and KPI measures.
